Spinsheet -June 27, 2021

Welcome back to Chatham Yacht Club and the post-pandemic Centennial Season!

A big thank you to our staff and volunteers who have been busy this week opening up the clubhouse, making our fleet ready to sail and ensuring our clubhouse and grounds are shipshape. Now it's time to start sailing and celebrating!

The question on everyone's mind: "What is the current mask policy?"

Fully vaccinated individuals will not need to wear a face covering or social distance at Chatham Yacht Club but may do so at their own discretion. Non-vaccinated individuals are required to continue wearing facemasks and distancing indoors. We have masks available at. the club if you need one. At this point, we are not requiring masks outdoors. Employees who are not fully vaccinated will be required to wear masks indoors. Chatham Yacht Club staff will continue to follow established best practices with regard to hygiene and sanitation protocols. As such CYC will not be serving self-serve refreshments after the races.

Waivers - Similar to last year we are requiring all members spending time at the club to sign a Liability Release. Please print out the following document, sign it, and bring it with you to drop off at the clubhouse. You can also pickup and sign a waiver at the clubhouse.

Waiver 2021

Race Schedule - The first official races will begin on Tuesday 6/29 at 1PM.

Social Calendar - The calendar of social activity is going to be full of activities as we look forward to reconnecting with friends and celebrating the 100th anniversary year!

Volunteering -Our programs and the culture are based on a community where everyone lends a hand so please consider where you can help out. There are volunteer opportunities available as parent-on-duty, race patrol and as an assistant helping complete building and grounds projects. You can sign up here.

We look forward to seeing you all this summer on Pleasant Bay with the CYC Community!

We are planning to start all morning classes together, at 9:00 am. On Monday, Tuesday and Friday, class will end at 12:00. On  Wednesdays and Thursdays sailors should bring a lunch and plan to eat outside before a sailing school race. The approximate end time on these days is 1:30.

If you have not already done so, please remember to fill out these two forms:

Please have your child BRING to Sailing School every day :

Due to Covid, we do not plan to spend time inside the clubhouse during the 2021 season. If the weather looks bad for sailing (excessive wind or rain/thunderstorms), we may need to cancel. Check you email for the latest. The goal is to send something by 8:00am if cancellation or postponement is necessary.

    Parking and Drop-Off Guidelines

Courtesy and Safety on the Golf Course

An average golf ball leaves the tee traveling 115 mph or more, and our path to CYC takes us right in front of the first tee. Adults and children need to take care as they cross in front.  Eastward Ho! has provided a fence to protect us.  CYC members should stop at the edge of the fence, look and assess the situation.  Always wait while golfers are teeing off, but if the golfers are waiting, they may signal it is safe to cross. Be aware as you approach the ninth green as well, since it is just beyond our path.

Eastward Ho! and CYC have a great working relationship, but it depends on CYC members being courteous to and respectful of the golfers.  Please wear shirts and shoes when crossing the hill, and do not use your cell phone.  It is best to be quiet when golfers are on the 9th green.  You may stop and wait, or move quietly by, but try not to distract those focusing on their putts.

A note from our program director:

The summer season for CYC’s 100th anniversary year is about to begin and I have a few last minute reminders.

Safety first: watch out for golfers teeing off or hitting to the green as you go over the hill. Parking lot safety begins with awareness and caution. For the classes starting at 9, we will have instructors ready to guide the younger sailors safely over the hill and back.

Sailors young and old should have life jackets, closed-toe shoes, sun block, drink and snack.

Thankfully, we are at a better spot in the pandemic. If you or your child are unvaccinated, please be ready to wear a mask inside the clubhouse.  Outside, you’re free to go without one.

Morning classes start at 9 and end at 12:00. After lunch on Wednesday and Thursday, we host races for the sailing school students, which usually last until 1:30.  Kids should bring their own lunch.

Sailing is always at the mercy of the weather. If there are adverse weather conditions such as an incoming thunderstorm or too much wind, please look to your email for cancellations. We will strive to notify everyone by 8 AM.

We look forward to helping your child develop a love of sailing. If there is anything we can do for you to that end, please reach out in a face to face conversation with your child’s instructor or a text to me, the program director, at 774-840-0289.

    See you soon,   Jeff Howell

    Getting your boat to CYC:

No boats or sailboards may be carried over the hill to be launched at CYC. Launching may take place at Jack Knife Harbor, the Town Landing on Crow's Pond, or in Round Cove.

Transportation of 420s and Optis over the hill for the purpose of attending regattas during the summer may occur ONLY before sunrise and after sunset per our lease with Eastward Ho!

First SERIES RACES of the 2021 season:

    Tuesday June 29 – 1:00pm:

    Weekly Race Schedule

Thankfully, we now have the flexibility to return to the traditional CYC racing schedule due to the loosening of Covid-19 restrictions.  Nevertheless, we received feedback at the end of last year that it would be ideal to retain some aspects of last season’s modified schedule, notably holding two races for each class each day.  Consequently, there are some modifications to this season’s schedule we wanted to highlight, notably on Saturdays.

Tuesdays: We will return to the traditional schedule.  Two races will be held with the first starting at 1:00pm.  The races will count towards two separate Series.

Wednesday: Sailing School races will return, starting at 12:30pm.  One Junior race will then begin at 2:00pm.

Thursday: Sailing School races will begin at 12:30pm.

Saturday: We are going to return to having all classes race on Saturdays but, to honor requests from last season, we will seek to hold two races for each fleetTo do so, we will need to break the classes into two groups and stagger the starting times for each:

    • 1:00pm – 3:00pm: 14-Foot Catboats, Beetle Cats, and Optimists will hold two races
    • 3:00pm – 5:00pm: 420s, Lasers, and Sunfish will hold two races

The two races each Saturday will count towards a single Series for each class.  As a reminder, there will only be one race on Saturday July 3 and Saturday August 21 in advance of the Opening and Closing Meetings, respectively.  A graphic showing the schedule is included below and will be posted to the racing section of the CYC website.

Similar to last season, we ask you to bear with us as we introduce these modifications to the schedule.  There will surely be some bumps in the implementation but we will seek to get them resolved as smoothly as possible.

Tuesday June 29 – 1:00pm: First Series races of the 2021 season.

Saturday July 3 – 2:00pm: A single Series race followed by CYC Opening Meeting.  Please note that races start at 2:00pm on this one Saturday due to the Chatham July 4 Parade in the morning.  Also please note that all classes will start sequentially after 2:00pm with no second later start time.

Sunday July 4 – 1:00pm: CYC July 4 race.  Please note that all classes will start sequentially after 1:00pm with no second later start time.  This will be a trophy race and not count toward a Series.

Saturday July 31 – Sunday August 1: Leo J. Telesmanick Beetle Cat Centennial Regatta held at CYC.  No CYC races held on Saturday July 31.

Friday August 6: Baybird Open House.

Saturday August 7 – Sunday August 8: Chatham Yacht Club Centennial Regatta.

Saturday August 21 – 1:00pm: A single final Series race followed by CYC Closing Meeting and Award Ceremony.  Please note that all classes will start sequentially after 1:00pm with no second later start time.

We will provide subsequent updates and reminders on these events in advance of each.

    Other Items

We will have the 2021 Series dates and 2021 Sailing Instructions posted to the racing section of the CYC website before the start of races next week.  In addition, US Sailing has issued the revised Racing Rules of Sailing for 2021 – 2024 and there are some notable updates, so be sure to check those changes.

Reach out to us anytime with questions or concerns.  We look forward to a great 2021 Centennial season for Chatham Yacht Club!

Once again Chatham Yacht Club will offer Adult Sailing classes.

The Adult Sailing Instructors met recently to plan for the season. We are excited to have expanded our class size so that we can get more adults out on the water. This year we will be dividing the group into those who want to learn sailing basics and those who want to learn racing tactics. We are also planning our annual sail to Hog Island. If you would be willing to lend your boat or offer your expertise, please contact Gwen Shipley (

In order to keep children safe, the costs affordable as well as maintain the community culture of Chatham Yacht Club, CYC relies on ALL members to volunteer in order to get everything done. This a great way to get to know old and new CYC members.

Thank you to those who have volunteered this season already!

Sailing School Families should sign up for at least ONE VOLUNTEER SLOT PER CHILD enrolled in Sailing School and at least ONE REGATTA DONATION PER CHILD in Sailing School. All other members should sign up for at least TWO VOLUNTEER SLOTS and donate at least ONE ITEM for the Regatta (see separate signups below; the more donations the better, thanks!). If you have a motorboat and are willing to serve as Race Patrol, please consider PATROL as your volunteer responsibility. If you have never patrolled before, don’t worry it is easy and there are plenty of folks to help guide you – just ask

    CYC Parking

The new parking lot configuration allows for multi-directional Fox Hill Road access from three points as illustrated in the diagram below. It is essential that all CYC traffic use the third entrance on Fox Hill road to minimize the access traffic and pedestrian hazards in the other parts of the parking area.

    The added parking has improved parking but we, EHCC and CYC, need to continue to optimize on the available parking with the following actions;

    Sailing School morning classes

CYC instructors will be available to help students to and from the CYC club house so parents can enjoy the convenience of “drop and go” noted by the yellow cross-hash area. Before 11:30 am, parking maybe available on a first-come, first-serve basis in the designated area, highlighted in green box, for parents to bring their children to classes, meet the instructors and fellow parents. Please be aware this area is not exclusive to CYC but shared with EHCC. If there is a shortage of parking spaces in the designated area, please park on the shoulder of Fox Hill Rd. “Pickup and go” will also be available for your convenience at the conclusion of morning classes at the Pick-up spot shown in the diagram. This is a safer and shaded location where our students can be ready for pick-up.

Parking begins to get busy around 11:30 when Eastward Ho! Lunch service begins. After 11:30, We ask that CYC members park on the Fox Hill road shoulder during lunch if the north lot is busy.

    Afternoon classes and races

Due to the limited amount of parking spaces, Parents are encouraged to enjoy the convenience of “drop and go” where appropriate for the children. Parents who would like to see your kids in action during the afternoon races can check for available parking spots in the designated (green) area after 2 PM. If there is a shortage of parking spaces at any time, please park on the shoulder of Fox Hill Rd.

Eastward Ho! will have parking lot attendants available to assist with traffic flow and direct CYC members to the designated (green) area. Please don’t hesitate to speak with them if you have any questions or need assistance.

As always, safety is paramount as we balance convenience and consideration for a shared parking resource with our friends at Eastward Ho!

Thank you for your cooperation as we begin a new exciting season at CYC!
