Teaching Love of Sailing on Pleasant Bay Since 1921

Summer 2021

Making History.

2021 ....what a year it's been! After 100 years of great sailing at Chatham Yacht Club you would think we could just enjoy the rich history and coast through this Centennial season. I mean ...we all we just came out of global pandemic and we could all use a break, right?  But NOOO! The making of history continues and this year CYC notched a number of new records and trophies to be sure. We may have had the largest gathering of Beetlecats (73) ever on one starting line when we hosted the 100th Anniversary Leo J. Telesmanick Championship; we had 19 Baybird sailboats sail into Pleasant Bay 100 years after the original 19 that were towed from Marblehead to begin our illustrious club history back in 1921; and we had one of our largest club social events with our Centennial Gala where we celebrated the 100th birthday of our club.  All along the way, the Sailing School students and instructors continued to notch impressive victories on both land and sea. Notably, the 1st place in the Youth Category (2nd place overall) in the Chatham Independence Day Parade and the 1st place finish in the SMSA Durant Cup Team Racing Championship were among the new history-making results that our club achieved.

Beyond the headlines the club is continuing to follow the principles that kept the CYC tradition strong for the past century; the promotion of sailing, sailing instruction and volunteerism in the community. Crew class novices progress to wide-eyed Optimist sailors and then, before you know it, they're trapping and putting up spinnakers on a 420 in the CYC Regatta. Some go on to teach their hard-earned sailing skills to the next generation and continue the cycle. Adult sailors conquer their fears and the myth that sailing is just for kids who grew up sailing. And members discover that as a group we can achieve some audacious goals even in a challenging environment when people are willing to help out.

This week we'll hand out awards, clean up the clubhouse and put away the boats to close out the sailing season. So as we wrap-up the Centennial Season at Chatham Yacht Club we can all look back with pride at the history we've made as individuals and as a group and look forward to what the next 100 years at Chatham Yacht Club will bring.

Thank you to each and every one of you for the contributions of time, spirit, and adventure that you have brought to the club. Without you, there would be no us. I personally am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with so many of you over this past year and am looking forward to what we can do together in the years to come.

John Maggioni

Commodore, Chatham Yacht Club

A note from the editorial staff:  The CYC Community is grateful for the leadership that Commodore John Maggioni has provided these past two years.  Imagine taking the helm during what must be the most tumultuous in the history of our beloved club?  Thank you John!
